Platform Tested- Xbox One with Kinect
Genre-
The style of this game is a dance game. It belongs to the genre of fitness. This game sits within the genre very well compared to other games as it is a game that is great to exercise too and also great to get out at parties as it is a multiplayer game and so as many people as you want can play even though it only shows 6 people when on the Xbox but it is also a game that has been produced for other platforms too for example the Wii. In comparison to Dance Central, it is so much easier. It also stands out as every year they bring out a newer version of this game with the latest songs.
Narrative-
Many different stories are told within this game, as there are many different songs with many different dances. The characters visualisations and are different for every song depending on the song that you are dancing too. Sometimes it will be a female that you will copy, other times it could be a male or a couple of dancers. Also there are group dances.
The interaction is basically just copying the visualisations moves and trying to get them right to gain points. The stories connect with the target audience because of the different moods of the songs and the dances that go with them. The target audience would choose a song that suited their mood.
Production Process-
This game was produced by the company Ubisoft.
Characterisation-
There aren’t really any characters in this game they are just visualisations of a person that you have to copy the dance moves from. So because there are no characters they are only relevant to the target audience when they are following the dances. The only appeal that the visualisations have to the target audience is the dance moves. The visualisations match the conventions of the genre as they help the audience to play the game. The characters are not that strong because they are visualisations.
Gameplay-
The challenge present in the game is the dance competition, so you compete against your friends to earn the most points. The other challenge is trying to get all your moves in perfect synchronisation with the character. The level and type of challenge engages the audience because they find it fun and they can use the game as either a challenging exercise or as just for a laugh with their friends. The elements of the gameplay that are key to the gamers success are basically just being able to keep up with the visualisation that is on the screen and copying the moves perfectly to earn the most points. The gameplay doesn’t change throughout the game the only thing that happens is that the songs can be changed and there is different dances with different visualisations which keeps the gamer interested.
Target Audience-
There is no specific target audience as everyone can use it. I personally think that is targeted at families, as they are more likely to use it and also young adults as stereotypically younger people are fitter and enjoy a good laugh. The indicators that this game is produced for this target audience is the music as many of the songs are the songs that are in the charts, although they do have older songs on the game for the older audience (families). There are many other games that this game can be compared to such as Dance Central as this is another game that come under the fitness genre as it is another dance game that is quite like Just Dance although you still copy the dancer on screen it doesn’t say whether you are getting the moves right.
Platform-
This game is available across two main platforms which are the Xbox and the Wii. I think that the game is more suited to the Xbox as more people can use it. The game is suited to this platform because more people can play the game, this is because the Wii can only have 4 remotes connected to it but the Xbox Kinect can have 6 people playing if it can sense you. It is also better than the Wii as the players don’t need to hold a controller or a remote to play the game as the Kinect will sense the players if they move in front of it.
